Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul is the new sound of 2022. They finally release their anticipated album “Topical Dancer” after teasing us with the singles “HAHA” , the genius pop of “Thank You” and of course the too-addictive “Ceci n’est pas un cliché” that they dropped in January.
I was writing about Charlotte Adigéry back in 2019 when she released “Patenipat” and it was the Tune Of The Week: https://nickzois.com/2019/01/29/patenipat-is-the-tune-of-the-week-from-charlotte-adigery-and-it-can-be-your-dancefloor-banger-in-2019/
Topical Dancer: It’s raw, it’s pure, it’s collective pop. The electronic sound of them both together deliver pure art. You can feel it listening to the lyrics, it’s a “now” thing. In the first listen it might sound too simple as a sound, but of course it’s not. Electronica on the pure form I would rather say. Old-school sounds revisited in 2022. It’s as punk, disco and forward-thinking as Madonna was back in 1983 when she released “Everybody”. In their own words, as they write on their site:
“WHAT’S IT ABOUT?” YOU ASK?
IT’S A SNAPSHOT OF HOW WE VIEW OUR WORLD IN THE 2020S, A GLIMPSE INTO THE CONVERSATIONS WE HAD OVER TEA, WHILST TOYING AROUND WITH SYNTHESIZERS, DRUM COMPUTERS AND WHAT-NOT AT THE DEEWEE STUDIO OVER THE PAST 2 YEARS.
THINK CULTURAL APPROPRIATION, MISOGYNY AND RACISM, SOCIAL MEDIA VANITY, POST-COLONIALISM AND POLITICAL CORRECTNESS…
BUT ALWAYS WITH A WINK (THAT WE BELIEVE IS WELCOME). AND THE LANGUAGE WE USE? POP CULTURE! SO YOU’RE WELCOME TO DANCE TO IT!
